Current Research

Professor Clarke is interested in two main areas: The factors that maintain genetic variation within populations, particularly those involving frequency-dependent selection; and the genetic changes that take place during the origin of species, with a special interest in land snails of the genus Partula that inhabit the high volcanic islands of the Pacific. Professor Clarke has recently established the Frozen Ark project to preserve the DNA of endagered species worldwide. More information can be found at (External) www.frozenark.org

Updated version of The Big Bibliography for both PC and Mac

This is a bibliography with more than 12,000 references to papers in evolutionary biology, population genetics and ecological genetics. It is useful because it includes references to many papers written before computer searches became established. Please note that the bibliography contains errors and duplications, and offers absolutely no guarantee of accuracy. You should always check any reference against the original publication before quoting it. I made the thing over many years as an aid to research, and for a book on frequency-dependent selection. It struck me that others might find the bibliography useful. Many of the recent references have abstracts attached.

These files have the advantage over the Web of Science (or Google Scholar) that they go back before the 1980s, they are much faster, and they have already been winnowed for their evolutionary interest. Many of the references, particularly the later ones, include abstracts of the papers.

Another source of references up to 1980 is Joe Felsenstein's Bibliography of Theoretical Population Genetics, Dowden, Hutchison and Ross Inc, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, 1981, pp. 866 (ISBN 0-87933-397-9). It does not include abstracts, but I have found it very useful.

The references here are in three formats, EndNote files for the Macintosh compressed in Stuffit format, EndNote files for the PC or Mac compressed in Zip format, and rich text files (rtf) for people without EndNote, also compressed in zip format. The EndNote files are more convenient than the rtf ones because theEndNote program (if you have it!) allows very fast and efficient searches. The rtf files have to be searched using a word processor or text editor.

To facilitate downloading, each bibliography is divided into two files of approximately equal size, the first with references up to and including 1996 (8679 refs) and the second with references after 1996 (3624 refs). They can be combined after downloading. There is, in addition, a simple list of references without abstracts or other extraneous information.

Keywords: evolution; population genetics; ecological genetics; polymorphism; evidence of natural selection; predation; parasitism; frequency-dependent selection by predators, parasites and competitors; density-dependent selection; MHC; resistance, virulence and susceptibility; mimicry; self-incompatibility; competition; molecular evolution (selection and neutrality); sympatric, parapatric and allopatric speciation; Cepaea; Partula; Drosophila; snails.

The files, and their sizes, are :

EndNote, to 1996, as Stuffit file for Mac; 2.0 Mb (.sit) select this link to download

EndNote, after 1996, as Stuffit file for Mac; 1.9 Mb (.sit) select this link to download

EndNote, to 1996, as Zip file for PC or Mac; 2.7Mb (.enl.zip) select this link to download

EndNote, after 1996, as Zip file for PC or Mac; 2.6Mb (.enl.zip) select this link to download

Rich Text File, to 1996, as Zip file for PC or Mac; 2.7Mb (.rtf.zip) select this link to download

Rich text file, after 1996, as Zip file for PC or Mac; 1.8Mb (rtf.zip) select this link to download

Reference list (no abstracts), all years, as Zip file for PC or Mac; 672Kb (rtf.zip) select this link to download

I wonder if anyone else has a bibliography like this that could be made 'downloadable', and whether they would consider sharing it. It could make up for gaps in this one.

In addition, Professor Clarke has recently established the Frozen Ark project to preserve the DNA of endagered species worldwide. More information can be found at (External) www.frozenark.org
