Current Research

My research interests have been focused mainly on polyamine-containing compounds from natural and synthetic sources and their effects on several important ionotropic receptors including nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), ionotropic glutamate receptors (IGR) and vanilloid receptors (TRPV1). Examples of such compounds include the philanthotoxins, originally discovered in the venom of a solitary wasp, Philanthus triangulum , and polymethylene tetraamines of synthetic origin.

The research is carried out using electrophysiological techniques including patch-clamp of neuronal cultures and cell lines, and voltage-clamp of Xenopus oocytes expressing the receptors. Structure-activity studies have enabled the identification of potent and selective antagonists and potentiators of these receptors and their mechanisms of action have been determined. The purpose of this research is to employ these compounds as tools to study receptor structure and to identify potentially useful therapeutic agents and pesticides. Other research interests include the study of toxins from animal and plant sources with respect to their effects on ionotropic receptors and ion channels using the methods described above. This research is predominantly a bioprospecting exercise to discover novel compounds that may be leads for the pharmaceutical and pesticide industries.
