Masters by Research

Masters by Research student

A series of Masters by Research (MRes) programmes are available. Our one year course allows students to undertake an original research project within a flexible programme structure, offering additional accredited taught courses to complement their research project.

The postgraduate course provides ideal preparation for a career in research science or a PhD. It combines the School's strengths in teaching, having an 'Excellent' rating (23/24) in the independent Teaching Quality Assessment, with a background of first rate research. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2008, 90% of the School's research was considered internationally competitive or better, while 50% was judged to be internationally excellent or world leading.

To take full advantage of the University welcome events, we recommend students commence at the beginning of the academic year in September. Alternatively, it is possible to start an MRes at any time of the year by prior agreement with the supervisor.

Subject areas

The Course Details section provides project outlines to help you decide which area to research. All courses have a common structure but allow focus on a specific area of interest.

We are accepting applications in the following areas:

Animal Behaviour Bioinformatics Biological Systems Cell Biology , Comparative Genomics Conservation Biology Developmental Biology Ecology Evolutionary Biology Fungal Biology Genetics Human Molecular Genetics Microbiology Microbial Biotechnology Molecular Biology Molecular Cell Biology Molecular Evolution Molecular Genetics Molecular Microbiology Molecular Neuroscience Neurobiology Parasitology Population Genetics Stem Cell Biology Toxicology

Once the School has your application and accompanying documents (e.g. referees’ reports, transcripts/certificates) your application will be matched to an appropriate supervisor. If you have already made contact with a potential supervisor, please make this clear in your application.

Career prospects

The Masters by Research offers an additional qualification to students seeking careers in research science. It provides experience of working independently in an academic environment, alongside experienced scientists, as well as the specific skills and training necessary to conduct research into your chosen discipline.

To date, 40% of graduates from our MRes programmes have gone on to undertake PhD study, with over 60% of these having gained phD places within the School. Of those undertaking PhD study, 54% are UK/EU students and 46% are international students.

International Scholarships

The School is delighted to offer 10 x £1,000 tuition fee scholarships, for international students starting full-time study on one of the MRes programmes in autumn 2012.

All international students who accept offers by the end of May 2012 will automatically be considered for an award.
