From October 2008, our Research will be assessed under the HEFCE Research Excellence Framework. The first report under this new system is likely to be issued in 2013/14. In addition to peer review, the remit of the REF will take into account the economic and social impact of research conducted in UK universities. The School is strongly placed to maintain its record of research excellence and innovation and to respond to the new assessment climate by building on existing extra-university links and partnerships and by developing new initiatives.
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures and the School of American and Canadian Studies (which together now make up the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies) achieved outstanding results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Globally, almost 90% of the School's research was judged to be of international quality. More than 80 members of staff were submitted making this one of the UK's largest and most successful centres of top quality research in Languages Cultures and Area Studies.

American and Canadian Studies According to the Exercise, 25 per cent of the Department's returns were judged 4* or 'world-leading' in terms of originality, significance and rigour; a further 20 per cent were of 3* quality ('internationally excellent)
Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies came joint top in the UK quality rankings with 30% of the department's research rated world-leading and 45% of international excellence.
Russian & Slavonic Studies was ranked fifth for quality with over 55% of their research rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
French & Francophone Studies came seventh for quality, with over 55% of their research rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
German Studies saw 40% of its research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Cultural Studies , entered for the first time as a unit, had 40% of its research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Research Power takes into account the number and proportion of research-active staff submitted in each unit. All four language units are in the top five in the UK:
This is an indicator of the relative size, breadth and sustainability of our research environment. Cultural Studies is a new and growing department, with a long-established international reputation for taught postgraduate degrees and postgraduate research.
