About the Centre

The Centre for Genetics and Genomics (formally known as the Institute of Genetics) was established in 1997 with the former Department of Genetics (est. 1971) as its nucleus. Building on the recognised excellence of the former department, the Centre is now the research driver for a much-expanded complement of group leaders within the School of Biology and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences .

Our main interests are described under the following headings – note that several group leaders have interests that contribute to two or more areas: Population and Evolutionary Genetics, Animal Behaviour and Ecology, Human Genetics, Parasite Biology and Immunogenetics, Developmental Genetics and Gene Control, Fungal Biology and Genetics, Molecular Cell Biology and Biophysics, Molecular Microbiology & Genome Dynamics.

The Centre has a thriving PhD programme and recruits some 10-15 postgraduate students every year. Details of Centre group leaders and their research interests can be found under ' people ' or ' research '.

We have achieved high international standing across all areas. Research managed by the Centre for Genetics and Genomics includes awards totalling over £36M and over 950 primary research papers during the current RAE assessment period.
