The BBC Two programme Stargazing Live (Jan 16th-18th) stimulated huge national interest and attracted millions of viewers. This TV coverage and a local Star Party in Wollaton Park highlighted important links with astrochemistry and the University of Nottingham.
Part of ‘Stargazing Live’ came directly from the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in which the Schools of Chemistry and Physics & Astronomy have a share. One of Nottingham’s joint Chemistry–Physics observations of a distant galaxy was being conducted during the TV broadcast. Nearer home, June McCombie presented a very popular talk ‘Chemistry of Space’ at the Wollaton Park Star Party and Peter Sarre and Mike Merrifield gave interviews on BBC Radio Nottingham on the university’s partnership with SALT and on the Star Party which was enjoyed by over four thousand people.
