Biography

Professor Neil Champness began his academic career with his B.Sc. from the University of Southampton in 1989. Remaining there under the supervision of Prof. W. Levason, in 1993 he obtained his Ph.D. Following postdoctoral studies, under the supervision of Prof. G. Reid, and a Teaching Fellowship at the University of Southampton he moved to the University of Nottingham in 1995 as a Teaching Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry. He took up an appointment as a Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry (1998), was promoted to Reader in Chemistry (2003) and to the Chair of Chemical Nanoscience (2004). He was awarded a Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship (2010-2011). In recognition of his research he was awarded the Bob Hay lectureship of the RSC UK Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry Group in 2005; the RSC Corday Morgan Medal in 2006 and RSC Supramolecular Chemistry Award in 2010. He was recently named as one of the top 100 most cited chemists of the last decade.

Current Research

Research is the Champness group concerns chemical nanoscience and all aspects of molecular organization, including surface supramolecular assembly and organization in the solid-state via crystal engineering. Particular targets of his work are guest molecular entrapment, including dihydrogen, and nanostructure fabrication for applications in molecular electronics and single molecule recognition.
