Disabled Students

Services for students who have a disability, dyslexia and/or a long-term medical condition

The University of Nottingham is committed to promoting access for students who have a disability, dyslexia and/or a long-term medical condition. Services provided aim to enable students to fulfil the inherent requirements of the course as independently as possible.

What we need you to do

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the University is aware of his/her individual requirements. Disabled students and students with a specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) or long-term medical condition are urged to inform their tutors and the School’s Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) – see below. Letting us know what you might need at an early stage will help us to help you.

What we can offer you

We can offer a range of academic and practical support for all students. Student Services Centre is responsible for making recommendations for alternative arrangements such as those required in examinations, assessments and for timetabling. Student Services Centre also incorporates a recognised ACCESS Centre for those who wish to apply for Disabled Students' Allowances, carrying out the assessments required by your LEA or funding body. Assistance can also be given with regard to queries about adapted accommodation and University provision of accessible transport.

We can also provide appropriate student material in alternative formats

The School’s procedure for disabled applicants follows the University policy. NB: there is much helpful information in the UCAS publication ‘Applying Online’. You can be referred to Student Services Centre, either at the application stage, or once you are a registered student or both. Student Services Centre will work with the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies to ensure that you receive the support you require. You can also refer yourself to Student Services Centre at any stage.

If you have a disability and intend to come to one of our open days, please contact the School Office in the first instance to discuss any particular support you may need for your visit.

School Disability Liaison Officer (DLO)

The School’s Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) is Jenny Hall  (jenny.hall@nottingham.ac.uk t: +44 (0)115 846 7769). Within the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies, she will usually be your first point of contact if you have a disability-related issue which you wish to discuss. Your personal tutor can also be approached in the first instance, and is likely to refer you on to the DLO. The role of the DLO is to provide a point of reference, advice and guidance for students in the School about disability issues and support, and to ensure that the School’s Disability Action Plan is implemented.

Student Services Centre

Student Services Centre is responsible for making recommendations for alternative arrangements such as those required in examinations, assessments and for timetabling. The team can also provide information about Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs), as well as the assessments required by LEAs, because it is a registered ACCESS Centre.
