visiting-scholars-july2010

The Visiting Scholars Programme is part of the internationalisation and research activity of the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at The University of Nottingham. The School wishes to attract Visiting Scholars working on aspects of contemporary China that are of interest to staff.

Visiting Scholars will benefit from working in an intellectually stimulating cross-disciplinary School which is co-located, and interacts closely, with the China Policy Institute. Visiting Scholars will be provided with shared office space and a computer, as well as access to academic, informational and institutional resources. Visiting Scholars may apply to stay at the School for up to 12 months.

Applications are welcome from all research-active academics as well as people working professionally in fields of interest to staff. Applications should be addressed to the Head of School, and will be considered by the School’s Research Committee with reference to space availability within the School and:

  • The extent to which the Visiting Fellow’s proposed research project and expertise complements the research activities of Institute staff
  • The quality of the proposed research project
  • The output expected to result from the visit, including publications and presentations
  • The strength of existing collaborative relations or potential for establishing collaborative links that will result in on-going, productive research activities
  • The applicant’s level of fluency in English.

Applications should state:

  • Applicant’s name, position, department and University or institutional affiliation
  • Proposed dates of visit
  • 1-2 page outline of proposed research project
  • Anticipated output, including publications, presentation of public lectures and the organisation of symposia
  • Explanation of how the proposed research project will contribute to the School's research activities
  • Source and details of funding for applicant’s visit and research project
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Names and contact details of two referees.

Visiting Scholars will be expected to:

  • Collaborate with staff and contribute toward the Institute’s broader research activities
  • Present a seminar at the School's China Seminar Series near the end of their term of residence
  • Provide the School with 1 paper per 6 month stay
  • Acknowledge their term as a Visiting Scholar at the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies in any publications resulting from the visit.

In return the School will provide:

  • A  staff member to collaborate with the visiting scholar
  • Visa invitation letter
  • Access to all University of Nottingham libraries
  • Computing, printing and photocopying facilities

As a rule a fee of £1,500 will be levied. Applicants may present a case for the fee to be waived.
