Biography

Dr. Elena Ratschen graduated in Culture and Language Studies at the University of Passau, Germany, in 2004, before commencing her first employment as a quality & process management consultant in healthcare. She came to Nottingham in 2006, achieved a Masters in Public Health degree with distinction in 2007, and a PhD (part-funded by the Medical Research Council) in 2009. She was appointed Lecturer in Tobacco Control in November 2009.

Current Research

Elena's current work focusses on the area of smoking and mental illness, with a special interest in the introduction of smokefree policies in mental health settings and the development of tailored tobacco dependence support for people with mental health problems. She has used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to her studies, and also has experience with piloting interventions in mental healt settings.Elena is currently leading a Department of Health funded pilot project aiming to develop a comprehensive and tailored tobacco dependence support model for mental health inpatient and community settings.

Other areas of research interest include harm reduction, vulnerable populations and substance abuse.
