On January 18th 2012, John Gladman, Division of Rehabilitation & Ageing, spoke to the NHS Confederation’s Commission on Improving Dignity of Care about the results of the SDO “Better Mental Health” study.
He said that staff in the NHS at all levels and in all professions were ill prepared for providing dementia care, and that hospital organisations and facilities were less than ideal. He said that a helpful way for staff and organisations to view the care of older people with dementia in hospital is to see the core problem as disruption of routine, and the core process as gaining or giving control to reduce the disruption.
