Biography

After completing undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Medicine, Dr. Kapil Sayal undertook a combined clinical and academic training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry. He was awarded a Health Services Research Training Fellowship investigating pathways to care for children at risk of ADHD and was subsequently appointed as a Clinical Lecturer. He completed his PhD during this period and received 3 awards marking a significant achievement in research for work based on his PhD, including the 2003 Royal College of Psychiatrists Research Prize. He was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 2005.

• Associate Editor of 'Evidence-Based Mental Health' (published by the BMJ Publishing Group). This is an international journal focusing on the review, critical appraisal, and dissemination of key recent research findings for clinicians and policy makers.
• Member of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guideline Development Group and Implementation Group for ADHD. Dr. Sayal's programme of Health Services Research investigating access to services for children with ADHD under-pinned the national stepped care pathway recommendations in these guidelines. He led the work on developing care pathways and was a member of the Education topic group developing practice recommendations for schools. He was a panel member at NICE's press conference to launch the guidelines and was interviewed by the media.

Current Research

Dr Sayal's research interests include developmental epidemiology, Health Services Research, and child and adolescent mental health in schools and primary care. He carries out epidemiological research in ADHD and the neuro-developmental consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure. His programme of Health Services Research includes intervention research that aims to improve the identification of and outcomes for children and young people with mental health problems in primary care and school settings.

He led a DH-funded follow-up of an RCT investigating the impact of school-based interventions for attention and hyperactivity problems on children's outcomes and access to services. He is the Nottingham lead on an NIHR HTA-funded RCT (PROMISE) investigating a school-based intervention that aims to prevent depression in high-risk adolescents.

He is a member of NIHR NDL CLAHRC Senior Leadership Team and is the Chief Investigator of the GAPP study which is investigating the implementation of an early intervention programme for parents and teachers for children with attention and hyperactivity problems.
