Biography

Tom Cox is Professor of Organisational Psychology and Director of the Institute of Work, Health & Organisations (I-WHO), University of Nottingham.

  • He obtained his BSc and PhD from the University of Nottingham.
  • A Chartered Occupational and a Chartered Health Psychologist, Tom is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, and of the Royal Society for Arts, Commerce and Manufactures.
  • He has been elected an Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences and received an Honorary Fellowships from the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Dublin) and from the Ergonomics Society.
  • He is now a member of the Academic Forum for Occupational Health, Royal College of Physicians (London).
  • His research and consultancy concerns the contribution of applied psychology to occupational health and safety with a special interest in the nature, management and prevention of work stress and related legal and policy issues.
  • He was awarded a CBE for his services to occupational health in January 2000.
  • Tom is a non Executive Director of the Rail Safety & Standards Board, and Chair of its Advisory Committee.
  • He is also Chair of the Board of Trustees of the CIRAS Charitable Trust, a railway related body for the confidential monitoring of safety incidents.
  • He is a member of the Health & Safety Commission's (HSC) Occupational Health Advisory Committee and Chair of its Working Group on Work-related Stress.
  • He has been sometime expert adviser to the European Commission (DG V) and World Health Organisation on work stress and work-related violence.
  • He was a member of the Ministry of Defence's Human Factors Committee in the 1980s.
  • Tom is currently President of the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology.
  • Tom is also Managing Editor of the international quarterly Work & Stress (Taylor & Francis), and a Book Series Editor for Issues in Occupational Health (also Taylor & Francis).
  • He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and Revista de Psicologia Aplicada Social.
  • In I-WHO, Tom convenes the postgraduate modules Introduction to Occupational Health Psychology and contributes to Organisational Development & Change, Ergonomics & Health and Organisations, Stress & Health.
  • As Head of Institute, Tom is holds the Chair of Directorate and is a member of University Senate.
