School overview

The School was formed in 1997, combining the strengths of established disciplines, and comprises the divisions of Epidemiology & Public Health, Primary Care, Psychiatry and Rehabilitation & Ageing.  In 2010, we were joined by the Institute of Work, Health & Organisations (Applied Psychology).

The common thread running through each of these divisions is that they all deal with communities, whether these be the entire populations of a region or country, a place of work, or particular client and patient groups such as the mentally ill, those with anti-social personality problems, families and children, people with disabilities, and elderly people.

We are based on several sites around Nottingham - University Hospital, Nottingham City Hospital, University Park and Jubilee Campus. The split-site nature of our activities reflects the size of the school and the strong connection between our research and service provision in the local community.

We also host the Clinical Trials Unit external link, PRIMIS external linkand NIHR RDS for the East Midlands external link

The School submitted an application for a Silver Athena Swan award in 2011 and was successful in achieving Bronze status. The working group comprised the Head of School, School Manager and School Secretary, together with a representative from each of the five Divisions of the School. The working group is now looking at the action plan drawn up and will continue to work on this throughout 2012.

Research interests

We have five major research themes based around each division.

Our research has flourished in recent years and research outputs have made important contributions to the literature and to health policy.

More about our research.

Undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities

Undergraduate education in the school focuses on the key contributions our staff make to the university's two medical degree courses at Nottingham and Derby, and applied psychology at the University's Malaysia campus.

The school has a strong record of supporting and developing professional careers through our postgraduate taught courses, and in helping our students to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to take up new opportunities, or in fields related to their previous qualifications.

We also offer a lively research environment and a diverse range of postgraduate research opportunities to students from all over the world.
