Welcome to the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies at the University of Nottingham.

The School is a lively unit, comprising seven Departments. This means that although the School is large, with over 1,500 students and around 120 full-time teaching staff, the Departments are small enough to welcome you as an individual. Within the School you have a sense of belonging to a wide community with a shared interest in studying the cultures, languages and societies of other parts of the world, notably Europe and the Americans, translation, communication, film and media studies.

Our ultimate goal in all our teaching is to encourage independence, active learning, critical thinking and generation of new ideas. This applies not only to our students but to our staff also. It's what makes them leaders in their research fields, enabling them both to inspire enthusiasm for their subjects and to give support when training others in approaches, methods and skills. Although these skills may be practiced in a particular course or context - language, literature, linguistics, history, film, cultural studies; lecture, seminar, tutorial, written and oral presentation - all are transferable to employment and your future career.

We wish you every success in your studies and look forward to welcoming you to our School in person.
