Biography

I graduated from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies with a BA in Serbo-Croatian Language and Literature in 1980. I began lecturing at the University of Nottingham, Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies, in January 1981 where I also worked on my doctoral thesis. I was awarded my PhD in 1989 on the representation of time in the novels of Miloš Crnjanski. From 1999 I have been Associate professor in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Nottingham.

Expertise Summary

My research interests are: cultural dialogue between dominant and minor cultures particularly as reflected in representations of the Balkans in the West; nationalism and its expression in cultural forms; Serbian cultural identities; Serbian literature and film; the construction of literary history both as a theoretical field and specifically within Serbian culture.

Research Summary

I am currently preparing a monograph with the working title Memory, History and War: Serbian stories from the death of Tito to conflict with NATO. Much literature of the period has been criticized… read more

Current Research

I am currently preparing a monograph with the working title Memory, History and War: Serbian stories from the death of Tito to conflict with NATO. Much literature of the period has been criticized abroad for its apparent support of nationalist narratives and praised at home for presnting new interpretations of the past to counter decades of communist mythology. My studies of the literature of the 1980s reveals that many writers were concerned with the difficulties of representing history in ways similar to postmodernism in western Europe and North America. Literature and films of the 1990s continue some of these early trends but now caught also in the atmosphere of war and the issue of how to narrate this most extreme of human conditions.

Past Research

I have previously worked on the influence of negative imagery about the Balkans on self-images within Serbian literature and film over the last 150 years with a particular amphasis on how this discourse was revivied druing the civil wars of the 1990s. I have also written on the cultural history of Belgrade, the ways in which it has been represented in literature and art, and viewing the city itself as a text in which its architectural styles and urban development reflect different periods of its past.

Future Research

I am considering a change in focus by turning to examine the culture in Serbia and its neighbours in the decade before the First World War. This was a period of intense modernization in all spheres of private and public life. I propose to study the effect of such changes as evident in cultural forms and even language. Literature offered a field for exploring new ways of thinking and feeling compared to the more traditional patterns of life in the Balkans. Language underwent a secondary series of reforms building on the first codifications of grammar and syntax from the nineteenth century pioneered by the likes of Vuk Karadžic and Ljdevit Gaj. Vocabulary, syntax and word order changed to reflect the new urban lifestyle developing in the region. I intend that my work will complement that already done by historians on the political and social modernization of the period.
