Past Research

My PhD, entitled '(Re)Viewing Resistance: The Psychoanalytic Encounter in Breillat, Calle, Denis and Duras', was awarded in 2005. Looking at the phenomenon of modern and contemporary film and photography which can be see as challenging for the viewer in certain respects, the thesis undertook a reading of these films and texts through the psychoanalytic (specifically Lacanian) notion of resistance. It thus sought to reconfigure both the ways in which we might approach such work and the ways in which film theory (particularly as regards spectatorship) has taken up psychoanalysis.

I have published on Marguerite Duras (novel and film), Catherine Breillat (film) and Annie Ernaux (photo-text).

Future Research

In the longer term, I am pursuing a project on masochistic spectatorship in contemporary film.
