War and Culture in Russian and Eastern Europe Conference, March 2013

In March 2013, the department hosted a conference on War and Culture in Russia and Eastern Europe. The extensive programme featured panels discussing war in literature, film and memory studies, as well as papers on the aftermath of war and its memorialization. The keynote speech was given by Professor Mileta Prodanovic from the University of Fine Art, Belgrade.

The conference also showcased the launch of the new website “Windows on War”. This online exhibition features a collection of World War II posters produced by the Central Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS), donated to the University archive by former Professor of English, Vivian de Sola Pinto. The project is the result of a collaboration between the department, Manuscripts and Special Collections and the Web Technologies team at the University of Nottingham, and involved a painstaking digitisation process, making the images accessible while preserving the originals.
