The diverse range of topics covered has included research on the causes of the fall of Novgorod the Great, children’s literature of the Soviet Union and the language policy of the international community in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The most recent PhD to be awarded in the department was to Laura Todd in 2016, for her thesis on Youth film in Russia and Serbia since the 1990s
