Nicholas Luker – one of the Student Union’s '100 Heroes'

In the academic year 2013-4, the University of Nottingham’s Student Union celebrated its own centenary. As part of a year of celebrations, the Alumni team ran an appeal encouraging all current and former staff and students to vote for the people and societies who touched their lives most during their time at University. Their ‘100 Heroes’ were duly recognised in an exhibition in the Portland Building in 2014. Dr Nicholas Luker was amongst those nominated and featured in the display.

Nick was a prominent member of staff who taught in the department from 1970-2010. He was the coordinator of all the study abroad arrangements for many years, while he also played an important role in student recruitment through his adult education work and by maintaining links with many schools teaching Russian. A prolific author, his publications include books on Aleksandr Grin, Aleksandr Kuprin and an anthology of the classics of socialist realism.
