Biography

Prior to being appointed to The University of Nottingham in 2012, I taught Spanish language at the University of St Andrews, the University of Glasgow, the University of Toulouse-le Mirail (France), the University of Paris-Est and at other institutions.

I graduated in Humanities from the University of Cadiz after completing a year of study at the University of Paris Ouest. I hold the Spanish equivalent of the PGCE and further certificates in teacher training. At the University of Toulouse, I took a Master's Degree in Iberian Studies and I have a Master's Degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from the University of Alcalá de Henares (Spain).

Recent Publications

The SPLAS Department has recently started collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes to be an Examination Centre for DELE exams from May 2015. I am the person in charge of running it. More detailed information about the exams will be available soon.

In the SPLAS Department, I am module convenor for three modules: the first and second year of ab-initio level (Beginners' Spanish and Lengua Española I-year 2) and the first year of post A-level (Lengua Española I). I teach weekly seminars in those three modules as well as a weekly grammar and translation lecture.

One of my research interests lies in the implementation of the Common European Framework of Reference to our modules. Other than adapting their content to the CEFR and PCIC (Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes) descriptors, we have adopted an action-based approach which has affected the materials we use, the teaching methodology we apply and other related activities.

I am involved in the implementation and use of several new teaching technologies in the Spanish language modules. Since 2013, I have implemented the use of clickers in my weekly grammar and translation lecture. I am also experimenting with other tools like Videoscribe, Voicethread, Quizlet, Padlet and Xerte Online Toolkits.

Most of my research in the last years deals with key concepts of teaching and learning like collaborative learning, the flipped classroom, blended learning, the role of motivation in the learning process and online teaching. One of the projects I am currently involved in is the creation of a NOOC (Nottingham Open Online Course) about Spanish language and culture.

I collaborate with several external institutions like the Instituto Cervantes (I am a trained DELE examiner), the International Baccalaureate (I am diploma examiner), the ELE-UK Association and some editors for whom I have reviewed the latest edition of some textbooks.

I am the SPLAS Department's Widening Participation officer.
