Research Topic

The emotional experience of segregated public transportation in the Jim Crow era, 1896-1964

Research Summary

This thesis works to unveil emotional experiences on segregated public transportation from 1896 to 1964. In so doing, it begins to open up how feelings evoked by segregated public transportation helped to fuel the black rights movement that demanded the end of the segregated system.

It reassesses the familiar topics of segregated transportation and the black struggle against it through the lens of emotions, helping to illuminate the full context of racial control white Americans exerted over African Americans - and how black activists converted this form of oppression into a weapon with which to attack segregation.
