Routes into Languages

Routes in Languages: increasing the take-up of languages from schools to university

The Routes into Languages programme was funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Under the programme, a number of regional consortia were established where groups of universities work together, with schools and colleges, to enthuse and encourage people to study languages. National networks were set up to promote translation and interpreting as careers; and three research projects have been commissioned.

The University of Nottingham is part of the Routes into Languages East Midlands Consortium from which funding has been used to support:

• Revision sessions
• e-mentoring
• Primary Language Ambassadors and an end of project Family Supper Celebration event
• web-based language resources 
• On-site visits
• Student Ambassador & Staff visits to local schools
• A yearly film competition for schools
