The Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme (UAS) involves students completing an accredited degree module working with teachers and pupils in local school in a specific subject area. In 2006 the scheme was introduced into The School of Modern languages and Cultures at Nottingham with a group of final year students studying German. The module was very successful with positive feedback from school and university staff, students, pupils and examiners. Following the initial success, the scheme has been expanded to accommodate more students in other languages and a broader variety of schools. Local Schools from the Widening Participation Consortium plus feeder primary schools host the students for approximately 6 to 7 weeks and allow them to work on a special project with pupils studying languages. Some university students from the local area have also had the opportunity to complete their placement in their former schools acting as excellent role models.
“I am really enjoying it, I'd been deliberating about whether to go into teaching or not and, partly as a result of the module, sent my PGCE application off yesterday! I think the module is an excellent idea, the children really seem to enjoy it and it's great experience for students.”
“Thank you for all your hard work to make the experience for the students here so enjoyable.” “I can't praise my 2 students enough! I think they'll both make great teachers!” “Our student was outstanding and we are very grateful for the hard work he has done and his enthusiastic approach.”
