PhD student wins funding

Lydia Langerwerf was recently awarded a GBP 2,700 Graduate School BESTS prize to fund a two-month research visit to the Forschungsgruppe Antiken Sklaverei, Mainz Jan-March 2009. She was also successful in gaining a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) research grant to fund a further 2 months in Mainz, May-July. Lydia is studying ancient representations of slave revolts in comparison to the Messenian rebels of Pausianias' Messeniaka, as part of the Sparta in Comparative Perspective Project run by Stephen Hodkinson.
