Research Summary
Current Research: Carnivalism in Satyr-drama
My research will attempt to place the satyr-drama within the realm of carnival literature. Its principal aim is to investigate the distinguished features of the satyric genre which reflect the intersection between the satyr-play and the carnivalesque culture of the Russian theorist Mikhail Bakhtin. In a comparative context, my study will begin by investigating the origin, nature, and development of the satyric genre in the history of ancient Greek drama; in addition, I will highlight the typical themes in the surviving satyr plays which can be found in carnival traditions. The aesthetics of the carnival will be a major key in this study. Most important are the grotesque, inversion, parody, and deformation; the presence of these aesthetics in the ancient satyr-play indicates the sarcastic relation between the satyr-play and the higher value of ancient Greek culture. It also reflects the tendency to emphasize the material life of humankind outside the value system of the official culture.
