Postgraduate Research Student, Faculty of Arts
I have taught at Nottingham since 2002, especially on Latin and Greek language modules (at all levels) and undergraduate literature modules.
I also teach Medieval Latin to MA students in the Department of History.
I am currently researching the extensive quotation from, and allusion to, Homer in the work of the 2nd-century AD satirist Lucian of Samosata.
In particular I am interested in how Lucian makes use of misquotation, cento and parody of passages from the Homeric poems, and how he employs Homeric characters (and the character 'Homer' himself) as speakers in his fictional worlds.
Lucian was a Syrian writing in Greek under the Roman Empire, so I am also interested in the special insights his work provides into the use of humour and irony as a way of appropriating the Greek literary past and negotiating the politics of ethnicity among the educated elite of the so-called Second Sophistic.
