IT Community Consultants

This award-winning project harnesses the skills and knowledge of Computer Science students to support third sector organisations who are experiencing difficulties or challenges with technology. The students work in small teams over a three month period, supported by University staff mentors with IT consultancy expertise. Projects include assessing options for secure data storage, creating specifications for new hardware and assessing the suitability of a contact management system.

Organisations benefit by having a detailed analysis of an IT problem, back up support provided by mentors and the ability to make informed choices and improve working practices.

Students benefit through the real-life application of what they learn in lectures, development opportunities through completion of a Nottingham Advantage Award Module and expert mentoring from experienced IT Consultants

A successful project

Harry Mumford-Turner, Zixhuan Cheng and Nathan Bratby worked with Glenise Martin from the Nottingham Elders Forum to look at a variety of aspects of the charity’s IT functionality. This included advising on the safe and efficient storage of information and making recommendations on the updating of hardware & operating systems which contributed to a bid for new equipment. The group also advised on social media that would be best suited to the charity’s target audience.

Glenise said, “The team were absolutely superb and so professional; we couldn’t have had a better one if we’d paid a huge sum for their services,” whilst Harry commented, “The skills I have learnt have been invaluable to me and will be invaluable to future employers because I will be able to demonstrate I have experience with team / client working on a professional level”.

We were very proud to receive a Vice-Chancellor's Achievement Award for this project in February 2015.
