Staff from the University's Information Services Department have been giving their time and expertise each week to support older people to learn basic IT skills. The six week course run in collaboration with the Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire, targeted Nottinghamshire residents aged 50 and above. Participants learnt new computer skills to help them get the best from online services including cheaper energy deals, insurance and other useful information. The training took place at the University's King's Meadow Campus using a bespoke Computer Training Suite.
The course ended in December and learners reported a reduction in feelings of isolation by being better able to communicate with families and also more confidence in on-line shopping, which can be of greatest assistance to those least likely to access the internet. Staff enjoyed supporting such a valuable project and there are plans to repeat the course at the Jubilee Campus in the Spring.
