Current Research

Andrzej Bargiela is a member of the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning (ASAP) research group in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham. His main research interests and activities fall under the general heading of Intelligent Decision Support and involve specific research areas of mathematical modelling and simulation of systems with uncertainties, information abstraction, parallel and distributed computing, artificial intelligence, fuzzy sets and neurocomputing.

Current research focuses on the development of Granular Computing as a coherent paradigm for processing information abstractions. The importance of abstracting from detailed information and forming information abstractions has been recognised throughout the development of natural and social sciences as a methodology enabling reasoning about complex systems. Of course, the abstraction from detail entails the undesirable reduction of accuracy of models built on such abstractions but it also enables enhancement of the models' generality. The essence of the current research is the improvement of understanding of the balance between these two concerns. Specific research projects include the following:

  • investigation of semantical transformation of information granules;
  • set-theoretical foundations of information granulation;
  • investigation of heuristics as granulated analytical algorithms;
  • exploration of the impact of Granular Modelling on Software Engineering;
  • investigation of hyper-computational nature of granular computation arising from the empirical verification of the semantics of information granules;
  • development of the principles of Granular Modelling and the associated design environment;

Past Research

Professor Bargiela's main research contributions include the following: -- development of the Confidence Limit Analysis methodology for the assessment of the accuracy of simulations using fuzzy input data; -- development and implementation of a probabilistic decision support system (applied in the context of water distribution networks); -- development of multi-resolution models of urban traffic flows and the implementation of a distributed computing framework for the predictive evaluation of traffic control strategies; -- development of intelligent data mining techniques and their application in the context of real-time urban traffic data; -- development of a fault-tolerant distributed computing environment that facilitates dependable implementation of decision support systems; -- development of spatio-temporal GIS models for the representation and simulation of urban transport systems; -- development of neural network based state estimation, confidence limit analysis and operational decision support; -- contribution to the development of the Granular Computing paradigm.

Future Research

Will broaden the investigation of the implications of Granular Modelling from the domain of engineering and natural sciences to the domains of arts and social sciences. The latter domains are arguably the precursors of information abstraction as implemented through human information processing. The research promises to offer new, more rigorous insights into formation of information abstractions and their use in human interaction (eg. evolution of social canons; evolution of natural language; evolution of art forms).
