Biography

Prior to 2005, my research focus was on image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision for real world applications, e.g., face recognition, video based personal navigation. Since 2005, I have mainly been working on medical image analysis and modelling, from image classification, segmentation, registration, to diffusion weighted MRI, functional MRI. I collaborate with the Medical School and the SPMMRC within the University of Nottingham, the UK SMEs, as well as European and International academic partners.

Current Research

Dr Li Bai's current research focuses on medical imaging and neuroimaging for the processing and analysis of neurodegenerative diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders in particular, using MRI and MicroCT.

Dr Bai is currently a Royal Academy of Engineering / Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellow, and is working on the analysis of microvasculature images to investigate the vascular contribution to neurodegeneration and the link between neurodegeneration and cardiovascular diseases. The investigation is being approached from several directions:

- Computational image analysis results of microvascular images of healthy as well as Alzheimer's brains are being compared to verify the neurovascular theory to neurodeveneration.

- Indivisualised vascular patterning / angiogenesis and cerebral blood flow are being modeled in 3D on the GPU.

- The combined analysis of morphological imaging features and genomic data is being made possible by the development of a statistical framework, to probe the genetic basis of disease pathogenesis.
