Current Research

I am interested in image processing and pattern recognition, especially in developing new algorithms and software tools for a variety of useful purposes. Much of the world's information is still available only in paper format, for example in books, journals, letters, drawings, schematics and maps. Digital documents are often simply scanned equivalents of paper documents in the form of a TIF or Fax image for example. As a group we are interested in algorithms that can recognise the inherent structure and content of such documents whether they are machine printed or produced by hand. We have a number of successful algorithms which have proved useful in building recognition systems including vectorisation, pattern matching and OCR components. Our work has enabled the development of a number of ground-breaking new products and has extended the state-of-the-art in processing digital documents. I am also working on pattern recognition applied to financial time series and stegonography and copyright protection. A recent focus of this activity has been the development of self-validating documents. In addition I am interested in signal processing and control and have recently been working on a guidance system for oil drilling heads. As my original degree was in mechanical engineering, and the early years of my working life were as an electronic engineer and consultant, I most enjoy cross-disciplinary projects and developing working artefacts and which allow me to exercise my competence across a broad spectrum of engineeering. I also enjoy the challenge of enterprise computing applications and this, together with programming, constitutes my main teaching activity, and overflows into research in a number of areas.
