Current Research

My research centers on the automatic understanding of human behavior. Specifically, I am looking at how computer vision and machine learning techniques can be applied to pain assessment in newborns. Neonatal pain assessment is an issue of utmost importance in medical practice as both under treatment or excessive use of pain killers can have detrimental effects on the neurological development of the child. Neonates are not able to self-report on pain hence, the goal of the research is to infer pain intensity in infants from their facial expression changes, limb movement and audio signals. Amongst other benefits, this will support clinical decisions on infant pain treatment, allow for continuous pain monitoring in neonatal ICUs and consequently result in improved infant health care.
