Concerned about a student or colleague?

The University Counselling Service are available to offer guidance and advice to staff who may be concerned about a student or colleague.

You can book an advisory appointment or speak to one of the counsellors by telephone. We might not be able to respond immediately but we will always try to speak to you as soon as possible.

Extenuating circumstances

Students who wish to apply for extenuating circumstances will need to provide evidence that they have:

  • a long-term illness
  • acute personal/emotional circumstances
  • been the victim of crime

To supplement the extenuating circumstances form evidence is needed. This could be:

  • a medical certificate
  • a letter from Cripps Health Centre or appropriate medical professional
  • a letter from University Counselling Services
  • a written statement about a crime, supported by written evidence from the police

NOTE: the University's Quality Manual guidance on Extenuating Circumstances (4.1.1) states that Schools may accept evidence provided by the student's personal tutor, Student Support Officer, Examinations' Officer or School Manager.

Tutors are encouraged not to send students to the Counselling Service for the explicit purpose of obtaining a letter supporting extenuating circumstances if they have no history of contact with the Service prior to their claim.  We may not be able to provide evidence in such cases.

If you are referring a student to us for consideration for a supporting letter for their extenuating circumstances application please see the links below.

Identifying and responding to students in difficulty

A number of students will encounter problems during their time at the University and staff may be asked to provide some help. These problems could be:

  • academic
  • personal
  • practical

Difficulties in one area can often affect other areas of a student's life. For more information please download the leaflet below.
