1. Aetiology of asthma and allergy
Studies of the role of environmental exposures, particularly passive cigarette smoke exposure, other indoor and outdoor pollutants, dietary nutrients, infections, and in particular, hookworm infection as a protective factor against asthma and allergy
2. Prevention of asthma and allergy
Clinical trials and natural experiments into the effects of dietary manipulation (nutrient supplements or restriction, or whole food supplements) on asthma control; randomised trials of hookworm eradication and therapeutic infection in asthma and allergy
3. Smoking cessation and prevention
Clinical trials and health services research in the design and delivery of smoking cessation services for hospital inpatients, teenaged smokers, pregnant smokers, socioeconomically deprived smokers; policy work in the development and implementation of effective tobacco control policy.
4. The epidemiology of Cryptogenic Fibrosing Alveolitis
Studies of the role of occupational exposures, smoking and other factors in the aetiology and natural history of cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis
