Welcome to the Department of Cultural Studies
The Department of Cultural Studies is a unit of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and encompasses a wide range of academic activities, ranging from research institutes and centres to postgraduate teaching at PhD and MA levels and to undergraduate teaching, both in designated degree programmes and in free-standing modules.
In undergraduate teaching, the Department runs the BA degree in International Media & Communications Studies (with joint honours degrees in French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish), together with twelve popular undergraduate modules taken by approximately 700 students a year. These degree courses are also run at our campuses in Malaysia and China.
At postgraduate level, the Department is responsible for several taught Masters degrees, both full- and part-time, with an annual intake of some 20 students, together with an intake of some 15 research students a year, again both full- and part-time, who cover a wide range of subjects. This makes the Department one of the largest postgraduate operations within the Arts Faculty
