If you are a full-time student at the University you can apply to become a Student Ambassador. This is a great scheme where you earn money whilst only committing to the work hours you sign up for, making it flexible to fit around your current studies. Student Ambassadors help the Widening Participation and Marketing teams; so you could be helping out at open days, UCAS events, campus tours and school visits to name a few. You will be required to complete an application form and attend an interview. If successful, you will join the scheme most convenient to you.
I really like working with younger people. I can help local school pupils see that university is a real option for them. It’s also a really great job in that I can fit it around all of my studies. It has also helped me appreciate just how brilliant and large our Campus is - sometimes you don’t even realise what there is until you take a group of people on a tour around it!
Four academic areas within the University offer their students a chance to do a single module placement in a school promoting their studied subject.
Areas taking part are:
Placements normally last ten weeks and involve between three to four hours per week in the school classroom. You will also receive full training before you start your placement.
This scheme is open to students who would like to develop their teaching skills in a real classroom environment. If you want to try teaching, but aren’t sure if it's for you - have a go anyway!
Here's what Ifeoma Stella Eni-Kalu, 3rd year Environmental Science student, had to say about the scheme:
I wanted to be part of the Student Associates Scheme in order to make a difference. It has benefited me in so many ways. I have learnt how to interact with children accordingly and I gained first-hand daily experience of bieng a teacher.
