CIePD staff have been involved since June 2007 in prototyping ATOM based exports for ePortfolio information, initially with Pebble Learning, and the University of Newcastle's ePET and Simon Grant from JISC-CETIS. The result was to begin to define a new, and more lighweight ePortfolio interoperability standard, LEAP2A.
This specification is intended to cover the representation of several kinds of information, centred around individuals, who collect, create and use their own information. Much of this information is typically of the kind that can be used for individuals' learning, but rather than being learning materials authored by an educator, the information covered by this specification is authored by the individuals themselves, about themselves.
The individual, whether pupil, student, apprentice, employee or none of these, may be thought of as a learner for our purposes. If a learner reflects, on the information collected, or on other things, the expression of that reflection will be one kind of information that will take a natural place among the other kinds of information dealt with here.

PIOP 2 - LEAP2A Interoperability projects2009
In 2009, the CIePD, with seven other partners work on the Portfolio Interoperability Projects (PIOP) funded through JISC-CETIS with an aim to test and develop the standard further with different ePortfolio systems. Working with the Nottinghamshire Connexions' Passportfolio system, developments were carried out to import and export LEAP2A XML feeds.

PIOP 3 - LEAP2A Interoperability projects 2010
The CIePD has been successful in securing further JISC funding to carry out a project partnered with Pebble Learning to extend the use of LEAP2A into work-based learning scenarios offered by the SAMSON project. This will develop and test the thin-ePortfolio model to support lifelong learning in different contexts.
