Course structure

The BSc Honours in Economics degree programme is studied full-time over three years. The academic year is divided into two semesters (Autumn and Spring) which consist of approximately 11 weeks of teaching followed by integral periods of revision and assessment.

Core principles of economics, international economics, quantitative and mathematical economics are covered and there is an emphasis on economic issues of regional and global concern. Students on this degree will develop the analytical and discursive skills of a well trained economist.

Year One (Qualifying Year)

Provides a rigorous grounding in economic theory and quantitative methods, and emphasises the relevance of such methods to the study of economic questions of cultural, political or social importance. This is achieved by including in the compulsory section of the Qualifying Year a range of modules that explore current economic issues and perspectives.

Year Two (Part I)

Focuses on the continued development and use of skills and knowledge in core disciplines of economics (microeconomics and macroeconomics) and quantitative methods, and also covers major sub-disciplines of economics (financial and monetary economics, international trade and development economics, public and labour economics).

Year Three (Part II)

Examines the major themes in economics in substantially greater detail. Students are given the opportunity to follow different learning pathways through combinations of advanced or specialised modules that build on the major sub-discipline topics in Part I.
