Roberto Bonfatti

Assistant Professor

"It was Frederic Bastiat, one of the great political economists of the 19th century, who remarked: 'When goods do not cross borders, soldiers will.' This is just one take on the links between international trade and international relations.

My research has a particular focus on the role of these factors in the rise and fall of colonial empires and their economic legacies, particularly in terms of former colonies' specialisations and how they use their natural resources. I’m also interested in how international trade and international relations can lead to the outbreak of war – which, believe me, is still relevant today."
