Associate Professor

"China's rise may be the economic story of our times, but it doesn’t follow that everyone gets to share in the country's success. When it comes to studying developing nations, it's essential to look past the headline figures and find out what's happening in terms of issues like labour markets, education, health and, maybe above all, poverty - because that's where you'll often find the real stories.

Most of my work has focused on China and Africa, and in my teaching I use a comparative perspective to encourage students to investigate the policy lessons that can be learnt from the differing economic performance of these ever more important regions."
