PhD Scholarships

The School of Economics has available a range of full and partial scholarships for new PhD students entering in the 2012/13 session. Some may be open to UK and EU students only, some to International students only, and some to all. All scholarships will be awarded to the best applicants on the basis of open competition (provided there are suitable candidates). For several schemes, it is necessary to hold an admissions offer from the School before the scholarship can be applied for. Candidates are advised to apply to the School well in advance of any scholarship deadline relevant to them. (See below for more detail.) They should also indicate on their admissions application form which scholarships they intend to be a candidate for.

ESRC awards

It is expected that there will be approximately four full ESRC studentships in Economics (covering tuition fees and c. £16500 per annum maintenance), funded by the ESRC through the University of Nottingham ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC). These are open to UK, EU and, in the case of Economics, international students. Candidates intending to apply for these awards are strongly advised to apply to the School for an admissions offer no later than 20th February 2012. This will allow consideration and perhaps refinement of your proposal before the ESRC DTC scholarship deadline of 15th March 2012, to which you must apply separately. Details of the DTC application procedure are at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/esrc-dtc/funding-application/index.aspx

ESRC candidates applying for direct entry to the research degree programme (“+3” awards) are advised that their research proposal is a key criterion and should be included in their admissions application. Successful candidates will have obtained (or currently be in the process of obtaining) a strong MSc in Economics or a subfield of Economics or equivalent qualifications.

The ESRC also allows “1+3” ESRC awards which include an MSc before the research degree. Undergraduates expecting first class degrees and intending to pursue a research degree after their MSc can be considered for these awards. As well as applying for entry to the MSc programme, they should send a short description of their proposed research area to Prof. Robin Cubitt (Robin.Cubitt@Nottingham.ac.uk) and indicate to him that they intend to apply for 1+3 funding.

University of Nottingham International Office awards

The University’s International Office has several scholarship schemes (and details of other opportunities) for non-UK students. For most of these awards, separate applications are required and candidates must already hold an admissions offer before applying. Further details are at:

http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/internationalstudents/scholarshipsfeesfinance/scholarships/index.aspx

Candidates who intend to apply for Vice-Chancellor’s Research Excellence awards (EU or International) are advised to apply to the School for an admissions offer no later than mid-February 2012. Candidates who intend to apply for China Scholarship Council awards should apply to the School by the end of January 2012. In each case, a separate deadline will apply for the scholarship application.

School awards

There will be a range of School of Economics scholarships and partial scholarships, open to UK, EU and international students. For partial awards, preference may be given to candidates who can demonstrate that they have access to additional funding. Candidates should make this clear in their admissions application. All candidates who have received admissions offers from the School by 15th May 2012 will be considered for these awards. (Later applicants may be considered in exceptional circumstances.) There is no separate application form for School of Economics research scholarships.

Additional important notes

It is expected that competition will be intense for all awards. Candidates are therefore advised to explore other sources of funding as well. Receiving an admissions offer does not guarantee that funding can be provided.

Candidates are advised that any incompleteness in their application (such as missing references or absence of a research proposal) will delay consideration of it. The School will attempt to consider applications promptly and efficiently but, as assessing research degree applications and matching to supervisors are complex processes, the School cannot guarantee how long it will take. If you intend to apply for awards that require you already to hold an admissions offer, you should apply well in advance.
