Research Summary

The thesis focuses upon the links between international migration and various aspects of economic development. Since the paucity of migration data is widely perceived to be one of the greatest obstacles in furthering our understanding of international migration, the first step will be to collate new macroeconomic data on international migration.

The first substantial chapter will concentrate upon the evolution of global immigrant-links - those business links fostered by migrants between the host and home countries. Although a growing discourse in this field generally finds a positive association between the presence of migrants and bilateral trade flows these studies tend to concentrate upon single developed nations. The application of the new dataset will allow the entire globe to be studied over time and as such a global estimate can be calculated for the first time.

Subsequent chapters might then focus upon the endogeneity between trade and migration and transnationalism - attempting to distinguish between permanent and temporary migrations on a global basis.
