Disabilities Information

The University of Nottingham is committed to promoting access for students who have a disability, dyslexia and/or a long-term medical condition. Services provided aim to enable students to fulfil the inherent requirements of the course as independently as possible.

The University also has a Disability Policy Advisory Unit which assists in the development of University Policy and procedures relating to disability and their compliance with the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) 2001.

What we need you to do …

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the University is aware of his/her individual requirements. Students who have a disability, specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) or long term medical condition are urged to inform their tutors and the Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) for the School. Letting us know what you might need at an early stage will help us to help you.  You should also contact Academic Support which is part of Student Services.

What we can offer you …

• The Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) for the School of Education is Dr Kaye Haw. The role of the DLO is to provide a point of reference, guidance for students in the School relating to disability issues and support. If you have any requirements or concerns talk in the first instance to the Disability Liaison Officer - or contact your tutor. The DLO also aims to ensure that the School's Disability Action Plan is implemented.
• The Student Services Centre offers a range of academic and practical support for all students. It can provide information about Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA’s) and, as a registered ACCESS Centre, the assessments required by LEAs. It is also responsible for making recommendations for alternative arrangements such as those required in examinations, assessments and for timetabling.
• The Disability Policy Advisory Unit, located in Student Services has specific responsibility with regard to queries on accommodation and transport and can also provide general advice and guidance to students.
• The Students’ Union has a voluntary group, Disability Action, that works to make sure that all students who have a disability can access a fair provision of education and services. They provide information, support and advice to students, as well as organising social events.
