Biography

Nicola Valentine is the author of literary novels (as Nicola Monaghan) and supernatural thrillers/horror (as Niki Valentine). She is course leader for the BA Creative and Professional Writing at Nottingham University, and was Fellow of the National Academy of Writing from 2006 to 2009. Her short stories and articles have been published widely, and her work has appeared in Granta, the Independent, the Guardian, Marie Claire and the Telegraph. She is a regular contributor to local radio broadcasting and has also appeared on Radio 4's Woman's Hour, Radio 4's Open Word, Radio 3's The Verb, East Midlands Today, Bookzone TV and the Alan Titchmarsh pilot show. She won a Betty Trask Award, The Authors' Club Best First Novel Award and The Waverton Good Read for her first novel The Killing Jar.

Current Research

At the beginning of a research career with a solid plan for scholarly and practitioner focused articles. Will be presenting 'Professionalising Writers', a workshop about vocationally focused courses for creative writers, at this November's NAWE conference and expect articles to come from this. Working on pieces 'Being Taught', about my experiences visiting students who are studying my novels, and 'Coming home to Write' about working as Writer in Residence at NUSA, a school around the corner from where I grew up.
