Masters in Special Needs (MA)

1 year full-time, 2-3 years part-time, Summer School

This course is designed for teachers or other professionals who have an interest in increasing their knowledge and skills in the field of special needs. It covers four main areas, 

  • Understanding and supporting students with reading difficulties/dyslexia.
  • Personal, social and emotional developments.
  • Behaviour and relationship management: from theory to practice.
  • Understanding and supporting mental well-being. 

The course contains both taught and experiential elements. It covers the theoretical aspects of each area, practical strategies and aspects of self-development. The course is also supplemented by seminars and workshops about study & research skills as well as additional needs such as sensory impairments, speech and language difficulties, and severe learning difficulties.

Students also have the opportunity to volunteer in local schools to gain greater experience.

  • PG Diploma and Certificate exit points.
  • Designed for teachers or other professionals who would like to increase their knowledge and skills in special needs.
  • Structured to enhance academic and professional potential.
  • Ideal preparation for MPhil or PhD.

Course Leader: Masters in Special Needs

Dr Edward Sellman (course leader) is a member of the UNESCO Centre for Comparative Education Research and the Centre for Research into Equity and Diversity in Education (CREDE). Edward trained as an art/primary-school teacher and has worked with children experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties in a range of settings. Edward, as a teaching member of the Centre for the Study of Human Relations (CSHR) is the course leader of the Masters in Special Needs programmes (Nottingham and Malaysia campuses) and acts as a supervisor for research students working for MPhil/PhD degrees. He has conducted research about children's experiences of exclusion from school, children's pathways into and out of crime, pupil voice and peer mediation projects in schools.  He is also a member of the Journal of Pastoral Care in Education editorial board and a Fellow of the Institute of Mental Health.
