Masters in Teaching English for Academic Purposes by Web-based distance learning

Our TEAP programme is flexibly designed to meet your needs.

The course aims to develop your critical understanding of recent developments in theory and practice relevant to teaching EAP and to stimulate you to reflect on your own teaching. It also prepares you to conduct independent research into teaching and learning.

There are three course start dates each year: September, January, May  

 


Modules

The course comprises three 20-credit core modules in the first year of study, reaching a total of 60 credits and Certificate level. Modules at 20-credits are assessed by written assignments of 5,000 words.

The course has three start dates and so the particular module you begin with depends on which of the three entry dates you have chosen:

  • EAP and Academic Contexts (September)
  • Academic Discourse and Literacies (January)
  • EAP Pedagogies (May)

In the second year, you will study four 15-credit elective modules, reaching a total of 120 credits and diploma level, these are assessed by a written assignments of 3,000 words.

2 or 3 modules from:

  • English for Academic Purposes and New Technologies
  • Assessment in English for Academic Purposes
  • Issues in English for Academic Purposes

1 or 2 modules from:

  • English for Specific Purposes
  • Learner Autonomy
  • Materials Evaluation and Design

The dissertation is worth 60 credits, making a total of 180 credits and Masters level.

Each assignment is graded numerically. To complete the Masters programme successfully, a Pass of 50 must be achieved on each assignment.

Once you have completed the taught element of the course, you move on to the dissertation. This is an extended piece of original research (12,000–15,000 words).

Course Specific Facilities

Our online materials provide an interactive learning experience, and allow you to engage with other students and your tutors in a well-organised and supportive environment. You will be encouraged to interact with other course participants, and the module units will involve group activities such as using blogs, wikis, and discussion boards. You will be in regular contact with tutors via email, chat, discussion boards and Skype.

Entry Requirements

Academic qualifications: You should normally hold an approved first degree with at least second class honours (or equivalent) or an approved professional qualification deemed to be equivalent to a second class honours degree.

Teaching experience: You must normally have a minimum of nine months’ full-time classroom English language teaching experience (650 hours of part-time experience) and should be involved in classroom language teaching when you commence the course.

Please note that teaching experience calculation should not include any teaching  practicum taken as part of a course. 

Applicants who have online teaching experience will also need to show how their hours have been calculated, and provide written evidence from employers

Consideration will also be given if you can demonstrate that your first degree included English language teaching methodology components, or that you have attended a substantial, approved TESOL methodology course and have a minimum of two months’ full-time classroom English teaching experience (145 hours of part-time experience).   Written evidence of experience from employers should be submitted at the time of application. If you have part-time English teaching experience you should show how you teaching hours have been calculated.

English language requirements
- IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in any element)
- TOEFL iBT 100 (with no less than 21 in listening, 22 in reading, 23 in
  speaking and 21 in writing)

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

If you have passed all the modules from the School’s Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English for Academic Purposes with a mark of 50 and above, you are eligible to apply for up to 60 credits APL to be set against elective modules.

If you hold the Cambridge ESOL DELTA or equivalent, you are eligible to apply for 20 credits APL to be set against one 20-credit core module (EAP Pedagogies).
