MA Teaching English for Academic Purposes (online)

This course can be started in September, January or May and is available online for part-time distance learning.

The MA Teaching English for Academic Purposes (TEAP) aims to equip you with the skills necessary to become a competent, research-informed and innovative English for Academic Purposes (EAP) practitioner. Worldwide there is a significant increase in the demand for EAP teachers, and this growth has stemmed from the expansion of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), the internationalisation of the higher education section, the increasingly dominant position of English as the language of education and research, and the rapid expansion of access to higher education.

The course focuses on the development of teacher competencies required to improve the academic literacy of students, and entails knowledge and skills that incorporate much more than basic mastery of classroom management skills and knowledge of language systems. In order to achieve this, and on the basis that EAP is essentially interdisciplinary, the course draws on a wide range of intellectual sources including:

  • second language acquisition
  • applied linguistics
  • psychology
  • sociology of education
  • epistemology and philosophy
  • ideology
  • cultural studies
  • media studies
