Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (by web-based distance learning)

Applications for the 17th September 2012 start must be received by 6th August 2012. Any applications received after this date will automatically be considered for the January 2013 start date

Course structure

There are 3 start dates each year (January, May and September).

The MA TESOL (by Web-based distance learning) is taught entirely online, and is part-time only. The course, which focuses on key areas in English Language Teaching (ELT), is designed to be completed in a little under three years.

Core modules (Year 1)

There are three core 20-credit modules, each of which is run once a year. The particular module that you begin with depends on which of the three entry dates you choose:

  • Applied Linguistics for TESOL (January)
  • The Language Learner and Language Learning (May)
  • Developments in TESOL Methodology (September)

Each of these modules is assessed by a 4000-word assignment.

Elective modules (Year 2)

Participants choose four 15-credit electives (each assessed by one 3000-word assignment or equivalent) from a selection of 8 modules (subject to availability) including:

  • Learner autonomy
  • Technology-enhanced language learning
  • Materials evaluation and design
  • Assessment in English for academic purposes
  • Issues in teaching English for academic purposes
  • The management of TESOL
  • Learning to train
  • English for specific purposes

It is possible to replace two 15-credit electives with one 30-credit online module from our MA Education (Flexible) programme, or one 30-credit MA Education module taken intensively face-to-face at Summer School in the UK (subject to availability).

Dissertation (Year 3)

Once you have completed the taught element of the course, you move on to the dissertation. This is an extended piece of original research (12,000–15,000 words).

Teaching materials

Our online materials provide an interactive learning experience, and allow you to engage with other students and your tutors in a well-organised and supportive environment.

MA in TESOL online

Entry Requirements

  • a first degree
  • relevant teaching experience (minimum of 9 months full-time classroom English language teaching experience, 650 hours part time equivalent)

Please note that teaching experience calculation should not include any teaching practicum taken as part of a course.

Applicants who have online teaching experience will also need to show how their hours have been calculated, and provide written evidence from employers

Accreditation on Prior Learning (APL)

If you have prior learning or experience at an appropriate level, you
may apply for exemption for credit requirements for the course. Applications for consideration for remission under this scheme should be made at the time of application for admission. All APL applications for this programme are processed free of charge.

If for example, you have successfully completed a Cambridge DELTA, you can apply for APL for 40 credits, which would enable you to be exempt from two of our core modules (The Language Learner and Language Learning, Developments in TESOL Methodology). In this case, you would begin the course in January with Applied Linguistics for TESOL.
