Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (UK)

1 year full-time, 2 years part-time

  • PG Diploma and Certificate exit points;
  • Modular programme of study - core and electives;
  • The four core areas of study: ‘the language learner and language learning’, ‘applied linguistics for TESOL’, developments in TESOL methodology’ and ‘current issues in TESOL’;
  • Some elective modules available also at the University of Nottingham in Malaysia;
  • Ideal preparation for MPhil  or PhD in TESOL. 

Course structure

At PG Cert level you study three x 20 credit modules. At PG Diploma level you are required to select four x 15 credit modules from a range of electives.  Your MA is completed with a 60 credit dissertation module.

Up to eight electives will be offered each year, depending on recruitment. Up to 30 credits' worth of electives may be chosen by negotiation from electives offered by the School of Education, the School of English Studies, or the Centre for English Language Education (CELE). Electives will normally be run only for a minimum of eight students.

Entry Requirements 

  • A first degree.
  • Relevant teaching experience (minimum of 9 months full-time classroom English language teaching experience, 650 hours part time equivalent). 

Please note that teaching experience calculation should not include any teaching  practicum taken as part of a course. 

Applicants who have online teaching experience will also need to show how their hours have been calculated, and provide written evidence from employers.

Applicants whose first language is not English must, as a minimum, fulfill one of the following conditions:

IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.5 in any component)
TOEFL 100 with no less than 21 in listening, 22 in reading, 23 in speaking and 21 in writing.

 

Accreditiation on Prior Learning (APL)

If you have prior learning or experience at an appropriate level, you
may apply on entry for exemption for up to a maximum of one-
third of the credit requirements for the course. Applications for
consideration for remission under this scheme should be made at
the time of application for admission. All APL applications for this
programme are processed free of charge.

If, for example, you have successfully completed a Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) or equivalent, you can apply for APL for 40 credits, which would enable you to be exempt for two of our core modules.

  • Volunteer to assist in local primary and secondary schools;
